Life is a poem, not a math equation

Life is a poem, not a math equation.Coach Traeger

That is a lesson that was hard for me to learn. By nature, I am an organizational freak. Every box and book has its place on the shelf. I don’t know where I got this from, but ultimately it can lead to the notion that we can control things around us. We start to look at life in black and white. We look for the answer to the equation. One plus one equals two, right? Isn’t that what they taught us in school? Well the older I get the more I discover that more often than not, one plus one equals something like one and one half.

Our western culture teaches us to look for the solution, the score, the dollar amount, the remainder, the black and white,…. we end up valuing only the result. This method of looking at life is futile.

Life is more about going outside the box than staying in. Life is about re-visiting questions that we thought we had the answer to….over and over and over again. Life’s events can have meanings and the meanings can contradict each other. Age teaches us to be more alert and forgiving because in every garden there hides a snake and every definitive answer may be a mirage.

We should view ourselves as nomads, exiles, pilgrims in a strange land. We need to value the journey more than the destination. It is often our mistakes that set the course for rewarding spiritual journeys, our crises that beget self contemplative pilgrimages.

So the next time you are frustrated with one of life’s problems to which the solution escapes you, erase the denominators and multipliers, and turn that page into a beautiful poem about your life.
